Biography

Alexandre Falguière was sponsored by his birth city Toulouse to study art in Paris and spent time under Albert-Ernst Carrier-Belluese and Jean Louise Chenillion. He was later admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts. Falguière won the Prix de Rome in 1859 and from 1863 until the end of the century he exhibited in every Salon. Even though Falguière was one of the most prolific monument-makers of his day, his real fame lies with a series of sensually naturalistic figures of goddesses and nymphs.
