Biography

Arthur Putnam was born in Waveland, Mississipi in 1873 but he grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. At 21 Putnam went to San Francisco to enroll at the Art Students’ League. He went on to study under Edward Kemeys, America’s first animalier. After studying in Europe (Italy and France) Putnam established a foundry with his brother-in-law in San Francisco. Tragically, most of Putnam’s early work was destroyed in the fire’s that followed the Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. His work was shown at the Armory Show in 1913 and is in the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the San Diego Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He was forced to stop sculpting at the young age of 38 due to health reasons.
