Biography
Everett Shinn was a member of The Eight or Ashcan School, a group of artists who at the turn of the century reacted against the refined, idealized subjects of the impressionists and chose to depict American life in a more earthy and realistic manner.
Shinn specialized in theatrical subjects, but much of his work was devoted to depicting the sights and street life of New York City. Some of his earlier pastels of New York recall Whistler's nocturnes and later Shinn returned to that palette and approach when he created the murals for the Oak Bar in the Plaza Hotel. With the exception of the nocturnes, however, Shinn's palette was generally bright and vivid.
