Biography
Through his bold depictions of urban life, realist painter George Bellows was one of the most important artists of his generation. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Bellows played semi-pro baseball before moving to New York City to study painting at the New York School of Art. Once in residence, Bellows soon became associated with the Ashcan School and a student of Robert Henri. Bellows gained acclaim and accolades for his studies of urban American life, boxers, Coney Island bathers, and tenement dwellers. In the 1920s Bellows began spending summers in Woodstock, NY and Maine where he applied his bold, impressionistic painting style to the natural subjects which surrounded him producing evocative images of the rough and rugged Maine coast line.
