Biography


Born in Concord, Vermont in 1858, Herbert Adams trained in Paris where he studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts, under the tutelage of Antonin Mercié. After five years abroad, Adams returned to New England, winning a public commission for a bronze fountain in Fitchburg, Massachusetts in 1888. During his life he sculpted many public monuments including ones for the Public Garden in Boston, New York City’s Bryant Park, and the Library of Congress. Adams also played a major role in the development of professional art organizations. He served as a trustee to the American Academy in Rome and as president of the National Academy of Design, and was elected president of the National Sculpture Society three times.
