Biography
Born into a poor Russian family on New York's lower East Side, he showed early drawing talent. At age 16, he won a scholarship to the Art Students League. He began the study of medicine at Yale University but turned to sculpture from exposure to the Yale School of Fine Arts. In New York, he studied painting with George DeForest Brush and sculpture with Hermon McNeill. Then he went to the Ecole des Beaxu-Arts in Paris and became accomplished at portrait modeling. He became a much sought after portrait sculptor, doing politicians, military, industrial and literary figures. He also modeled busts of the founders of Israel.
