Biography
Born in Italy, the son of a Russian Prince and an American mother, Troubetzkoy spent his life traveling, studying and working in Italy, Russia, America, and France. He received substantial public recognition and many awards in major European cities. The artist was awarded his first gold medal in 1894 by Milan’s Gallery of Modern Art. It was Troubetzkoy’s rider and horse sculpture, entitled Indian Scout, which won him this award. The sculpture was modeled from performers the artist had seen at Buffalo Bill’s Show, which had toured the Italian city that same year. While he is also known for his portraits, Troubetskoy is best known for being an interpreter of animal form in an ‘impressionistic” technique. Cowboy on a Bucking Horse not only incorporates both of the artist’s strongest subjects, but is also reminiscent of Troubetzkoy’s first major sculpture.
