Biography
Paul Wayland Bartlett was born in the United States and moved to Paris at age nine. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1879 at the age of fourteen with a bust of his grandmother. The following year he enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and studies under Pierre Jules Cavelier. Bartlett soon became captivated with animal sculpture and began studying with Emmanuel Frémiet at the Jardin des Plantes. Georges Gardet, a prominent animalier sculptor, hired Bartlett to work as a studio hand and became adept in the French modeling
