Biography

Wheeler Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 3, 1897. He was proficient in sculpting, painting and lithography. Williams’s educational background was remarkable. He studied sculpture at the Art Institute in Chicago, obtained his undergraduate degree from Yale, his masters in architecture from Harvard, and then returned to sculpture and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jules Coutan. Many of the early commissions Williams received were for pediments on buildings in New York, Washington D.C. and Brazil. The influence of architectural training that Williams received is evident in his sculptural works as seen in the precise outlines, firm modeling and organized compositions. Williams was commissioned to create portraits of famous men in addition to the wonderful decorative garden and fountain works he designed. Animal subjects were also of interest to him and he modeled groups of dolphins, giraffes, dogs and roosters.
