GEOFFREY DASHWOOD

An exhibition of 15 new bronzes by Geoffrey Dashwood will be on view at James Graham & Sons from November 22nd through December 23rd. A full color catalog for this show is available with images of 12 works.

Dashwood's cast bronze sculptures in this exhibition depict various birds in refined elegance. Dashwood brings to each of his sculptures the deepest understanding of his subject, born of long and close observation of birds. This familiarity with birds and animals goes back to his years as a game warden in The New Forest in south England. His sculpture is not in any sense invented or generalized, mere reference and homage as it were to the Kingdom of the Bird at large. Each work for all its refinement and reduction to its essential form is none the less recognizable as the specific creature it depicts. Dashwood creates in each work a sense of precarious poise that immediately tells the viewer the bird is alive, whether by the twist of a foot, the cock of a head or flirt of a wing.

In addition for this exhibition Dashwood also takes the same level of refined elegance and observation to the Monumental Frog. This is one of the few examples of work by Dashwood that does not depict a bird. The frog rests on a rock and looks as if at any moment he might leap off at the viewer.

Geoffrey Dashwood was born in Hampshire in 1947. At the age of fifteen he won a place on merit to study fine art at Southampton College of Art. Preferring an outdoor life and studying directly from nature he left the college soon after his arrival there.

Dashwood's sculptures of birds have won numerous awards, including best sculpture at the Society of Wildlife Artists for three years in a row and also first prize for sculpture at the International Festival De L'Art Animalier in the Loire Valley of France. His works have been exhibited in the United States at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum and the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

VIVIENNE FOLEY: PORCELAIN

An exhibition of new works in porcelain by London-based ceramist Vivienne Foley will be on view at James Graham & Sons from November 22nd through December 23rd. This is Foley's fifth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Foley is known for creating porcelain works that are contemporary, elegant, and technically accomplished. Using classical wheel throwing and turning techniques, she constructs vessel-based and sculptural forms. Porcelain is a difficult material to manipulate, but Foley achieves height and complex forms by joining thinly made sections into a seamless surface.

Foley accentuates the pure simplicity of the forms she creates by using monochromatic glazes. In addition to her black magnesium and ivory crackle glazes she has used in the past Foley has started to work with three new glazes: dehua, blue ice and cracked ice, as she refers to them.

Vivienne Foley was born in England and studied ceramics at Sir John Cass School of Art in London from 1965 to 1969. Her works are in several collections, including the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin and the Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland. She has held over 20 solo exhibitions.

A fully illustrated catalogue of Vivienne Foley's work is available through the gallery (139 pages).

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 to 5:30, and Saturday, 10:00 to 5:30. For more information, please contact Cameron Shay or Cristine Chiasson at the gallery at
